Quick trip to Iowa

Made a trip to Iowa for a few days last week. Here is a picture of corn being stored on the ground. Iowa had a record corn crop this fall and all the bins are full.

Sat out a few times to see how the deer herd looked. Iowa has a late January doe season so I did my part and shot a doe.

The deer are doing well eating the beans we left standing.

Its a little early for shed hunting but I did find a nice set laying in the snow.

I found an old house foundation on the property. Not sure what this is but looks to be a under ground storm shelter or a root cellar. When the snow is gone I will investagate this some more.

Iowa Deer Season 2009

We had high hopes of a great Iowa deer season this year. We had some food plots that were great and some that were really bad because of the wet summer.

This was going to be my lucky spot this year, I never saw a buck even close to being a shooter.

One of our big bean fields. The snow started on the night of the second day and never quit. We didn't hunt the last day because we had blizzard conditions.

The truck box again worked out great to get out of the snow.

You have to keep the heat on high to get icicles like this.

We would have breakfast in our rooms and be out the door by 5:30 am. Lunch in the blind and dinner in a restaurant every night.

Deer Camp 2009

Deer camp started out warm and sunny. Was a great day to catch a few trout out of Eagle Lake.

Grandparents Day

Today Mary and I went to Grandparents day at Zeeland Christain where Gisele goes to a Young Three's class.

It was a lot of fun. They had us help her with 4 craft type projects. One was to paint her face.

The theme for the day was a circus. Here she colored a horse and put it in a circus wagon that she made.

Work week in Iowa.

Spent the past week in Iowa working on the property with Junior Huyser.

We put up three double gates. It went quite well
and the weather was perfect.

On Wednesday Jason and Dan Huyser arrived to help put up four deer blinds. The blinds were there but we had to screw in the ten foot legs.

At age 80 Junior makes it look easy. He is such a big help for me, I couldn't do it without him.

We got all the legs on the end by of the day on Wednesday.

Thursday was wet most of the day but with rain gear we kept working.

Back to Iowa

Putting in a gate post.

Went to Iowa this past week with Mary's Dad. Here we are unloading poles that we are using to make gate post.

We put in six poles for gates.

We also put out 5 trail cameras to try to get some pictures of the deer on the property.

These are water tanks that we will fill with water from a pond behind them and use the water for spraying the fields. Before we had to haul water from town on a trailer.

Reed City Work Day

Wednesday I went up north to Dad's deer camp at Reed City. He needed some help planting some food plots. In this picture is my Dad age 90, Lou age 91 and Jerry age 74. All walk with canes, now you know why they needed help.

Jim De Witt also was there to drive the tractor.

Of course Mary's Dad was also there, he is 80.

They always have a good lunch. Today it was roast venison and pork with fresh sweet corn.

The Storm Of 2009

Sunday night a short but powerful storm went through the Spring Lake area. This is a house in Fruitport.

My driveway had lots of trees and limbs down and we had to get the chainsaws out to get out of the driveway.

Quite a mess.

Two days later we are still without power but we have a generator for some lights and microwave. No TV or Internet equals long nights. We are very thankful that we escaped the brunt of the storm with no real damage.

Ottawa County Fair

Went to the Ottawa County Fair with Mary, Ashley, Gisele and Jacob. The kids really liked the animal barns and the rides. Be sure and watch the video at the bottom.

70-90 Celebration

Saturday was the celebration of my Mom and Dads 90th birthdays and 70th wedding anniversary. A family picture with all 121 family members was taken. We finished the day with a chicken BBQ and games for the kids.

Mary went back to the Doctor on Tuesday. The wrist has still been quite sore and black and blue. They took xrays and said it was broke. No cast but has to keep the brace on for four more weeks.

We Have A Problem

For the past few weeks we have had two sparrows trying to build a nest in our awning.
This is on our deck and we really don't want this mess there. Every day we tear it out and every day they put it back. It is amazing how much nest building two birds can do in one day. Then a few days ago we saw them mating. I said to Mary were going to have problems. I don't know for sure but I think the birds inner clock tells them to build a nest right before mating season.
We keep telling them to go make a nest some other place but they keep coming back.

This morning this is what we found on our deck. Momma sparrow is starting to lay her eggs but does not have a nest. Now what do we do???

Chicago

We went to Chicago Sunday afternoon to see Ashley. She lives in Lincoln Park which is close to downtown.

Our little girl is all grown up and doing quite well on her own in the big city of Chicago. We are proud of her!!

We had a great day and had a nice tour of where she lives. It was quite different than what I thought it would be like. If you ever get to Chicago give her a call, she is a great tour guide.

Fort Myers Beach to Michigan

Mary and I flew to Florida on Sunday to close the condo down for the summer and then drive home with the boat. We got everything done and Wednesday morning we were on our way home. Five minutes into a 25 hour trip we had our first argument about which way to go but after that it went great. The first day on the road we had great weather and we drove till 10 that night. Thursday it rained the whole day but we made it home by 4 pm. Now if only Summer would come to Michigan.

Field Work

I spent Friday working at the tree farm property on Filmore Street. This used to be a Christmas tree farm years ago. I burned as much as I could then disked it up. I want to turn this into a productive field for crops.

Everything was going well untill the golf course next door came over and asked me to stop because all the smoke was blowing over the course.

Spring Break 2009

Mary and I spent the last few weeks in Florida. We had lots of fun with Gisele on the beach.

The excitement of the week was this sailboat that blew up on the beach during a storm. The owner was a beach bum that everyone felt sorry for. He collected money for five days then took off leaving the boat.

We have great beach for finding sand dollars and shells.

Paul and I went shed hunting Friday afternoon. This is a really nice one that we found.

On Saturday we went to the Iowa Deer Classic in Des Moines. This is the new number one Iowa bow kill.

Busy Friday

We woke up this morning at 6 am to the sounds of sirens and when we opened the door we could smell smoke. Just down the lake from our house a house was on fire. I drove over there to see what was going on and took a few pictures. I sent this one to WOOD TV and they used it on the morning news.

The fire was put out and everyone got out safely.

Then it was off to Detroit with Jason, Wade and Brian Slagh to tour the General Motors Heritage Collection. They have about 800 cars in inventory and show about 200 in this room. Everything from concept cars to current models. Lots of muscle cars and old trucks. Every one of them are in like new condition. We went here with a car club from Hudsonville.

Mary looked out the window this morning and saw two coyote running across a frozen Spring Lake.

On my way up north today I saw a train that appears to have run out of fuel. It was on M37 just south of Baldwin. At least it wasn't Amtrak.

80th Birthday Bash

This past weekend we celebrated Mary's Dad's 80th birthday (and Mary's birthday) at Southfork Lodge. The whole family was there including my family and Mark, Debi and family!
We had a great time celebrating!

On Saturday morning we celebrated with a brunch!

It's hard to believe that Grandpa Huyser is 80!! He is still so active and loves to still work with me at Southfork!!!

We ended the celebration with a sleigh ride through the woods!!

Trip to Florida

Paul Van Dam and I left Friday morning to haul the boat down to Ft. Myers Beach. We tried to beat the storm but we didn't quite make it. Here we are stuck behind an accident north of Fort Wayne. We sat for 1 1/2 hours in the snow.

After about 24 hours of driving we made it to the Florida line.

It was 80 degrees the next day when we cleaned up the boat.

Here is our first boat ride in Florida.

Jodie and Gisele are still here so we were able to take Gisele with us on the ride.

New Years At The Cabin

Mary and I spent the weekend at the cabin with Jason and Martha and the boys and Mary's Mom and Dad. Jacob liked riding in the big tractor with his Papa.

We finally had enough snow to get the sleigh out .

Family Christmas Party

We had our family Christmas party Friday night at Eric and Jodie's house. Here Eric is preparing the tenderloin steaks. Everything tasted great. Don't tell the girls but he slipped in some venison steaks and no one even noticed.

I didn't really want to post this on top of my last post but I'm bored. I had carpel tunnel surgery this morning on my right hand. Don't really know why I had this problem but Mary's Dad had it done last week so I think it might have something to do with both of us going to Bitely so often. I have to keep it wrapped and not use it to much for the next week. Sure glad my hunting season is done.

"I GOT HIM"

I GOT HIM, that is what I was telling everyone who I talked to last night. I have been hunting for this buck hard all season. It all came to an end last night at 4:45 when he ran out into the field.
Now for the whole story. I have to thank Eric and Jason for all their help in finally shooting this great buck. Eric and Jason got their bucks early in the bow season. They then went to work to help me get this one. Eric hung tree stands and put up tent blinds where he thought I could get him. Jason never stopped putting up and always moving the trail cameras as he tried to find out where this guy was living. I shot him out of a blind that Jason had moved to this field this fall. I never hunted for a specific buck before this year. We had so many trail cam pictures of him but never in the day light. Then on November 12 Eric got video of him at 10 yards. Whenever we got together we talked about how to hunt this buck. Just Monday Eric and I were looking at aerials trying to figure out where he was living and where to sit. Our last picture of him was December 13 so I knew he was still in the area. It was then that I decided to sit on this field where we have all the pictures, the rest of the season. It was a perfect night to hunt. Cold and a storm coming, they would be feeding on the food plot early. The field was full of deer when this buck came running out onto the field. It was all over in 30 seconds. I made a perfect shot through the heart at 100 yards and he folded up after running 25 yards. He was just under 23 inches outside with a nice double brow tine. He scored 152 inches gross. My biggest Michigan buck ever. Thanks again Eric and Jason and Mary for putting up with me the last two months!

It was a family affair celebrating in the barn last night.

The Last Day!

The only thing more beautiful than the sun rising over an Iowa bean field is the smiling faces of my grandkids when I see them again . Its the last morning of the season and it is 5 degrees. This is about all I saw today, nothing seemed to be moving and nobody filled the last tag. Tomorrow we will clean out the blinds and head home. It was a great season and can't wait to come back in the spring and go shed hunting.

Eric did it again! For the second time this year he got his buck on opening day. He shot this beautiful Iowa 10 point at 10 am Saturday morning. Everyone is seeing bucks so I hope I will be able to post more bucks in the next few days.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Mary and I spent the weekend at the cabin with Ashley, Ryan, Eric, Gisele and Jacob. We spent a lot of time in the barn playing with ABC the cat. Grandma and Grandpa Huyser were there also.

Had to feed the fish at Eagle Lake.

The kids had fun playing in the cabin.

I was able to shoot a doe Friday night.

Another Accident

This time I am in the accident. Friday morning at 6:30 I was on my way to go deer hunting when someone pulled in front of me at US 31 and Hayes Street.

This is the truck that I t-boned when it went through the red light.

This is a truck that was driving next to me and got caught up in the wreck .

My truck on the hook. Thank God everyone walked away from this accident which is a miracle.

I have a sore chest from the seat belt but otherwise I am fine.

Remember to always wear your seat belt!!

The buck to doe ratio is way out of wack at Southfork. Thanks to Ralph, Gordy, Ken and Mark we put a serious dent in the doe population. Not sure how many are here but maybe you can count the legs and divide by four.

That Time Of Year

Getting close to deer season. We had to make sure the guns were sighted in. Here is Jason shooting his Ultimate muzzle loader.

We have been working on this truck box for the last few weeks. We are taking it to Iowa to use as a storage container.

This is before I painted the inside. We put a gas stove and heater in it to make life a little easier in the woods

It is a quick trip, we have to be back in Michigan for opener on November 15.

Every Party Needs a Pooper!

Tonight was Keith's birthday party, we won't say how old he is. We went out for dinner to Two Tony's in Spring Lake with the birthday boy, Mary, Jason, Martha, Deacon, Jacob and myself (Ashley). After a delicious dinner we came home for presents and apple dumplings! After a long night of partying, Keith was partied out. While everyone played with his new present (Wii Deer Hunter), he fell asleep! I guess every party needs a pooper...

The Accident

After church this past Sunday, Mary and I decided to take a ride to the cabin . We were driving north on Maple Island Road when we saw something in the road ahead of us that didn't look right. When we got closer we realized it was a head on collision that had just happened and we were the first to arrive on the scene. I jumped out of the car as Mary was calling 911. I was not prepared for what I was about to see. The young man who was driving the car was not moving. The man and woman in the van appeared to be seriously injured. In the back seat of the van I saw a 4 year old boy who was crying but seemed to be alright. Other people started to stop and began to help, but we couldn't get any of the car doors open. Someone handed me a tire iron and I broke out the back window of the van. Another man went inside and carried the boy out. Then we realized there was another boy in the back seat. I was able to open the side door and carry him out. The young boy seemed to be unconscious and not breathing, so I laid him in the grass. A woman and I started to perform CPR. Not long after we started, emergency help arrived and took over. After aeromed had arrived and the ambulance had left, we left with pits in our stomachs. We later learned that the drivers of both vehicles and the two year old boy that I had carried out of the van had not survived. The four year old suffered a broken arm and a concussion. The woman in the front seat was flown to Spectrum and remains in serious condition. We also learned the man and woman in the van were grandparents of the two boys. Please keep the family and friends of the victims in your thoughts and prayers.

This time it is Jason! I saw this buck from my stand but it was to far for a shot. I knew he was heading towards Jason but I still couldn't believe it when he called me and said he just shot the big eight point. We let it sit for a few hours before we tracked it. Two for two tuesday

I have not been a big bow hunter the last few years. This year I bought a new bow and decided to get back into it. This is a view from my tree stand.

Tuesday was a beautiful morning, cool and clear. The deer were moving and I was able to harvest two doe. A big part of our deer management program is to keep the doe population at a level that the land can support. These two deer went to a local family that likes venison.

Another busy day

Went up north today with Mary's Dad. First stop was Legends Taxidermy. All our trophy's from Africa were delivered last week. These are the tusks from my elephant.

This rack is full of the skulls and horns of everything we shot. All the skins are at the tanner.

These are the skulls of our Giraffe.

Next stop was Foster Lake. We are looking at replacing the two dams that control the level of the lake. I met with an engineer that will help us with this project. The dams are old and need to be fixed or replaced.

If you are thinking about a color tour the time is right. It is beautiful!

Last stop was South Fork. Gisele is at our house today and she loves "ABC" the cat. So Gisele this picture is for you.

Mountain Goat Hunting in British Columbia

Paul Van Dam and myself left on October 7 to spend a week hunting Goat in BC. This is our camp where we stayed while hunting. Camp was on an island that made it a little harder for the Bears to bother us. We had great weather and the area was beautiful.
This is what they look like running around the mountain. We saw this one right after I shot mine. It is as steep as it looks.

Here I am on the four hour trek it took to get where the Goat was. The altitude was not as bad as the steepness of the terrain.

This was quite a dinner we had the second night in camp. Soup, sandwich and hot dogs.

This is where we finally got a shot at the Goat.

I shot it the first day of the hunt. It tumbled hundreds of feet down the mountain before coming to a stop. Paul shot his the next day and we were home Sunday night October 12. It was a great hunt that you can never be in good enough shape for but I made it and was quite happy I did not have to climb the mountain another day.

Busy Friday

Went with Tim Lucas this morning to Blendon Pines to do a little pheasant hunting. Tim wanted to try out his two year old black lab Ruby. It was a beautiful morning to be outside. Ruby did a great job and we were able to shoot 4 birds.

Martha called and said that Jacob was asking for me all morning. Thats all it took and I was on my way to Zeeland to pick him up and take him home. Here he is playing piano with Grandma.

Jacob is always asking where Zell is so on the way to bring him home we stopped at her house and they played together for a while. Jacob loves to play with her kitchen set.

BBD in West Olive

Big Buck Down in West Olive for Eric. He wasted little time in starting and ending his hunting season in the Hill's. He made a great shot with his bow at about 30 yards.

He watched it come out of the swamp only to spook and go back in. The Buck made his mistake when he came back out in the same spot an hour later. After Eric made the shot the Buck ran past where Jason was hunting and he saw the arrow sticking out of the Deer and could confirm for Eric that he made a Perfect Shot. Using a lantern they tracked it slowly into the swamp and found him floating in the Pigeon River dead.

Great job Eric!!

Back to Iowa

Jason and I headed back to Iowa on Thursday to finish up getting the blinds ready for the Iowa deer season.

Here is the work site. We had to put 8 foot legs on three of the blinds.

Here is what they look like after we placed them into position.

We also placed some ground blinds out. This one is on a power line. We mowed it so we would have a better view. You can see the blind in the center of the picture along the tree line.

We also were anxious to see what we had on the trail cameras that I put out 4 weeks ago.

As you can see we were not dissapointed!

On saturday we held our second annual Bitely Bash. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed fun games, a hay ride, great food, and wonderful friends!

Farming for Wildlife

Went up to Bitely this past wednesday. I finished drilling in some rye in a field that had turnips planted in it earlier but the deer ate it down to the bare ground. Grandpa Huyser and I sat out two nights to count deer. We saw over 80 deer each night on two fields but only 8 were bucks. The second picture shows 3 spikes and a 4 point. I see another dismal deer season for 2008.

Deacon's Baptism

On Saturday night we went to Jason and Martha's house for dinner and then to Deacon's baptism at Ridgepoint Church. It was a fun night. It is so special to see your Grandkids being baptised. Deacon had all five Grandpa's attend the service. That must be a record!

Its kind of a boring day today so I thought I would join in on the fun of blogging. I am sure it will be a slow process as I learn how to do this. Everyone always calls and asks me "what are you doing" so I am going to try to keep everyone informed on what I have been doing.
